The CROSSFLOW System
What is it?
The CROSSFLOW System includes an industrial-grade computer, a signal
conditioning unit, a multiplexer, a NEMA-12 cabinet and two or more
externally mounted brackets with transducers.
How does it work?
In order to measure the flow rate within a pipe, the signal-conditioning
unit generates a high-frequency ultrasonic signal, which is passed
through the fluid. As the signal passes through the fluid, it is modulated
by the eddies within the fluid.
The same eddies also modulate a second ultrasonic signal that is located
a precise distance downstream of the first one. The only difference
between the two modulations is the time it took for the eddies to
travel between the two signals.
Through a mathematical process called cross-correlation, the computer calculates this displacement in time.
Knowing the physical distance between the two ultrasonic signals and
the time displacement, and the correction factor, the bulk velocity of the liquid can be determined.
The flowrate can then be calculated from the bulk velocity, the flow area and the fluid density.
CROSSFLOW in Action - See how it works.
How do you benefit from it?
- It is the only non-intrusive (externally mounted) technology
approved by the USNRC for plant license amendments associated
with power uprates. Several utilities have prepared and been approved,
are actively preparing or are planning to submit requests for
license amendments based on this technology.
- It requires virtually no plant modifications. Because the system
is
non-intrusive, it can be installed at most plants in a few hours
while the plant is operating at full power.

- It has no restriction on cable length, thus providing additional
flexibility in hardware location setup.

- It has an outstanding reliability record.
- It can be used to monitor a number of pipes in different locations
simultaneously, or to provide portable monitoring as part of the
plant in-service inspection and test programs.

- Over 1 million hours of successful operation in the most inhospitable
installations in the world (e.g., temperatures exceeding 300°C,
high radiation, exposure to the elements).
The CORRTEMP System
The CORRTEMP System measures the temperature of fluids within pipes
non-intrusively.
The CORRTEMP System will provide the plant with pipe water temperature
instrumentation that has at least a 2-sigma uncertainty of over 0.7°F
(the warranted accuracy of this system).
This system is not susceptible to thermal streaming since it measures
the average temperature.
The system can also measure the pipe wall thickness and can be used
to detect leaks.
AMAG ACL Software
Our software allows the CROSSFLOW System to interface directly with various plant instrumentation so as to maximize
total plant efficiency.
The CROSSFLOW System signal-processing unit is implemented on an industrial
platform, which allows communication between the interface and the
plant computer to be customized.
To establish this interface, a detailed requirements specification
is prepared that defines input/output data, a calculation and algorithm
and the network media and communication protocol.
